A stuck pixel is a single sub-pixel that still receives power but is locked in one color - red, green or blue - instead of changing with the rest of the screen. On a black background it shows up as a tiny bright colored dot. Unlike a dead pixel, which is permanently black and usually a hardware failure, a stuck pixel is often recoverable.

Every pixel is built from red, green and blue sub-pixels. When one gets stuck, rapidly forcing all three channels to switch on and off can jolt it back into normal operation. Does it work on dead pixels?

Usually not. A dead pixel is permanently black because it receives no power - that's a hardware failure color cycling can't fix. Other ways to fix a stuck pixel

  • Gentle pressure: Turn the screen off, place a soft cloth over the spot, and press very lightly for 5-10 seconds, then power back on. Never press hard - you can crack the panel, especially on thin laptops and OLEDs.
  • Warmth: Some users report that running the color cycler while the panel is mildly warm helps the crystals respond. Keep the device ventilated and never overheat it.
  • Time: A few stuck pixels resolve themselves after a few days of normal use without any intervention at all.

When to give up and claim warranty
